"And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger: and he that believeth on me shall never thirst'" JOHN 6:35 KJV
Jesus Satisfies
Bread is considered a common part of our food group and a basic part of our meals. A person can live for a long time by only eating bread and drinking water. The term, "Breaking Bread" has been a term used to describe people sharing a meal together. Unleavened bread has played an important role in the Jewish Passover meal as a celebration of the Exodus from Egypt and serves as a reminder of when the Jews were wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. God sustained the nation by sending "bread from heaven." When Jesus referred to Himself as The Bread of Life, He was saying that He is essential for life. He has come to sustain us with a bread that will not perish, but that will provide eternal life.
The phrase "Bread of Life" is composed of two Greek words, artos (ar tos) and zoe (dzo ay). Artos is simply a mixture of flour and water baked into a loaf or a round, plate-sized cake about an inch to an inch and a half thick and meant to be broken- not cut. This type of bread was an everyday staple in Israel's diet and was used at The Lord's table.
Zoe, however, was a leap from speaking of the common to speaking of the uncommon, the spiritual or supernatural! Zoe isn't life that only consists of breathing and existing, it refers to a more abundant state—including the absolute fullness of life which belongs to God. John 10:10 lets us know that The Bread of Life has come to give us Life (Zoe) and that Life(Zoe) more abundantly." More abundantly in this passage is the Greek word perissos (per-is-sos), an adjective describing Zoe life as exceeding in measure, rank, or need; over and above, more than is necessary, exceedingly abundant, supremely; superior, surpassing, uncommon, more remarkable, more excellent!
Jesus, The Bread of Life, is our sustaining source of amore excellent, everlasting life who satisfies all who would taste and see(Psalm 34:8)!
